IFR Flight Plans
Here is a super-concise summary of when, what, and how to file for IFR flight plans.
When:
An IFR flight plan must be filed (and clearance obtained) before operating an aircraft in controlled airspace under IFR. § 91.173.
What:
An IFR flight plan must include the same information as a VFR flight plan, plus an alternate airport (unless the first airport of intended landing has a published IAP and the forecast 1hr before and after ETA is at least 2,000’ CIG and 3 SM visibility). § 91.169. You also need to include ICAO equipment codes; here is ForeFlight’s quick guide to them.
How:
(1) The FAA’s official means of filing a flight plan is through Flight Service, which is available by phone at 1-800-WX-BRIEF or online at www.1800wxbrief.com .
(2) Third party EFB apps also can file flight plans (e.g., ForeFlight or Garmin Pilot).
*Form 7233-4 (International Flight Plan) is the required format for all civilian IFR flights except those operating on stereo routes. AIM App’x 4, FAA Form 7233-4, International Flight Plan.
